District Update - February 25, 2021

February 25, 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians:

With the sun rising earlier, spring is soon to come!  At South Lake Schools, our in-person classrooms are already filled with new life and excitement!  There is an infectious energy and enthusiasm in our halls and classrooms.

If you had visited the “100th day of school” celebration at Avalon Elementary, you would have seen this combination of exuberance and education.  The day included making necklaces from 100 fruit loops, counting to 100 by 5’s and 10’s, expressing wishes for 100 things (i.e., 100 sisters, 100 dollars, and 100 video games), and creating pictures of how the students imagined they would look if they were 100 years old.

A South Lake education is about student engagement. Our teachers utilize creative ways to combine celebration with math, science, and language learning.   These types of activities establish positive relationships that enhance collaborative interaction.  Our students have positive associations with learning because of vibrant classroom environments.

I continue to be amazed by the incredible accomplishments of our students and alumni. One such alum, Dr. Jason McClellan, was recently recognized by Dr. Anthony Fauci for his role in helping develop the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. He is currently an associate professor of molecular biosciences at the University of Texas and has been leading the research team of epidemiologists instrumental to the development of the vaccine.

We are proud of Dr. McClellan and his many accomplishments.  He embodies the vibrant learning that occurs within South Lake Schools.  Like so many South Lake School alumni, Dr. McClellan is making a difference both locally and globally!  His commitment to making the world healthier and safe reflects our own district commitment.

The health and safety of our students and staff remains a top priority. Across the district, we continue to implement mitigation strategies such as face masks, frequent hand washing, using disinfectants and social distancing.  While the decreasing positivity rate provides hope, we must remain vigilant. Please continue to screen your children for symptoms before each day of in-person learning. We appreciate your assistance in checking your child’s temperature in the morning, encouraging frequent hand washing and ensuring that they wear a mask to school.

Like Dr. Jason McClellan, every child at South Lake Schools has the potential to achieve great things. Thank you for entrusting us with your children and partnering with us to provide an education of excellence for every child!
